About Norditropin®

What is somatropin?

Somatropin is a synthetic form of the growth hormone naturally produced by the pituitary gland. It is produced through recombinant DNA technology and is chemically identical to the growth hormone produced by the human body. It is prescribed to replace the hormone in patients whose bodies do not produce enough of it, or to address specific growth-related conditions.

Formulations available in Mexico

In Mexico, Norditropin® is typically available in the FlexPro® prefilled pen system. The pens contain pre-measured cartridges of somatropin solution and are designed for multiple doses. Common strengths include:

• 5 mg / 1.5 mL FlexPro® pen
• 10 mg / 1.5 mL FlexPro® pen
• 15 mg / 1.5 mL FlexPro® pen

The specific formulation and dose prescribed will depend on the patient's condition, weight, age, and response to therapy — and is determined by the prescribing physician.

How it's administered

Norditropin® is given by subcutaneous injection (under the skin), typically once daily in the evening. The FlexPro® pen is designed for self-administration after training by a healthcare professional. Common injection sites include the front of the thigh, the buttocks, or the abdomen — rotated to avoid tissue damage.

Storage

• Unopened pens: refrigerated at 2–8 °C (36–46 °F). Do not freeze. Protect from light.
• In-use pens: per the manufacturer's current labeling — typically up to 3 weeks refrigerated, or a shorter period at room temperature below 25 °C (77 °F). Always follow the instructions on the package insert provided with your medication.

Discard any pen that has been frozen or exposed to temperatures outside the labeled range.

Things to discuss with your doctor

Before starting Norditropin®, your physician will review your medical history. Inform them if you have any of the following, as they may affect whether therapy is appropriate:

• Active cancer or a history of malignancy
• Severe respiratory impairment or severe obesity (in children with Prader-Willi syndrome)
• Diabetic retinopathy
• Closed epiphyses (in pediatric patients being treated for growth)
• Acute critical illness following surgery, trauma, or respiratory failure
• Pregnancy or breastfeeding

These are not the only conditions that matter — always disclose your full medical history, including all medications and supplements, to your prescribing physician.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, somatropin can cause side effects. Common ones may include injection-site reactions, headache, joint or muscle pain, and fluid retention. More serious adverse events, while less common, can occur. Your physician will discuss these with you and monitor you during therapy. Report any unusual or severe symptoms promptly.
