FlexPro^® is easy to learn to use, and easy to use. (Please see the Instructions for Use in the Prescribing Information.)

Some kids feel comfortable giving their own injection. Others participate by putting on and taking off the needle. You can give your child a part in the process (make sure you discuss this with your doctor).

Different pens for different doses

FlexPro^® pens come in 4 strengths, and they’re color coded. Your doctor will decide which strength is right for you, based on the dose you need.

It’s easy to select the appropriate dose: just turn the dial to the correct amount. You can adjust the dose up or down. And it makes a different clicking sound when dialing up or down.

No need to load

Novo Nordisk^® developed the first prefilled, preloaded, multidose delivery pen. The pen comes already filled with Norditropin^®. You don’t have to fill the pen, load medicine, change cartridges, or change batteries.

This is great because there aren’t a lot of parts to keep track of: just the pen, pen cap, and needles. This means you can take the pen on the go.^a

About the Needles

NovoFine^® needles are some of the thinnest needles on the market.^a Needle diameter is measured in gauge. The higher the gauge number, the thinner the needle.

Needle thickness

NovoFine^® 32G is a 32-gauge needle, which is less than one-quarter of a millimeter thick (0.229 mm). In comparison, needles used for vaccinations are usually between 23 and 25 gauge, or 0.635 mm to 0.508 mm.

Needle length

NovoFine^® 32G needles are 4 millimeters long. Compare this to the diameter of a dime, which is almost 18 mm. Needles typically used for vaccinations are between 15 mm and 31 mm.

One-time use

FlexPro^® pens use disposable needles that twist on and off of the pen and should be discarded after each use. Some kids like to attach the needle themselves, even if they are not ready to self-inject.

PenMate^®

PenMate^® is a reusable cover for the FlexPro^® pen, created for people who prefer not to see the needle on their pens.b An option designed exclusively for use with FlexPro^® 5 mg, 10 mg, and 15 mg pens, PenMate^® has a large gripping surface so you can hold it firmly in your hands. Once it’s attached to the FlexPro^® pen, it completely covers the needle—you won’t see the needle during injection because the insertion button inserts the needle into the skin for you.

Autocover^®

NovoFine^® Autocover^® needles have a shield that hides the needle before, during, and after the injection. The shield covers the needle, retracts during growth hormone injection, and then covers the needle again. Because it “locks” after use, it may also reduce the risk of accidentally sticking yourself with the needle after you’ve used it. Autocover^® can be used with all Norditropin^® FlexPro^® pens.

Your pen at home or away

Whether you’re at home or away, here’s what you need to know to take care of your FlexPro^®

Room temperature storage after first use.^a

Most other growth hormones must be refrigerated at all times, but not Norditropin FlexPro^® pens.

Store them in the refrigerator at first, but after the first time you use FlexPro^®, they can be kept at room temperature (up to 77°F) if you’ll be using them within 21 days. (If you need to keep a pen for up to 4 weeks, store it in the fridge.a) This may allow for greater flexibility without having to preplan refrigeration for pens during overnight visits, vacations—even last-minute trips.

^a All unused Norditropin^® products must be refrigerated (36°F to 46°F) prior to first use. Do not freeze and avoid direct light. After first injection, Norditropin^® pens can either be stored outside of the refrigerator (up to 77°F) for use within 3 weeks, or in the refrigerator (between 36°F and 46°F) for use within 4 weeks.

Traveling with the pen

Because FlexPro^® pens don’t require refrigeration after first use,a you can take them with you to the soccer game, the friend’s house for a sleepover, etc.

If you need to travel with an unopened pen, you can use a cooler bag to keep it cold. Keeping some cold packs in the freezer all the time will allow you to just grab it and go.

If you’re traveling by air, we recommend that you bring all your FlexPro^® devices with you in your hand-carried bags. There is a high risk that your FlexPro^® will freeze in checked luggage, and keeping it with you ensures you can get your regular dose even if your luggage should be lost or delayed.

A safe place

Here are some common-sense practices for storing your FlexPro^® pen:

• Store the pen away from pets and children. Keep it in the same place every day so it doesn’t get lost.
• If you store the pen in the fridge, make sure it’s not too close to the freezer, and that it won’t fall out when you open the door.
• If you live in a warm area, be certain that the pen isn’t getting warmer than 77°F.^a
• Likewise, if you’re traveling with the pen, make sure it doesn’t get warmer than 77°F. Be aware that the temperature inside a sun-warmed car can get much higher than this.
• The pen should be stored away from direct light. Keep the lid on the pen at all times to keep light away from the solution.

Disposing of pens and needles

It’s a good idea to check with your waste disposal company or with your local regulatory agencies to find out your options for prefilled device disposal. The needle and pen must be disposed of in a sharps disposal container.
